Catherine Costigan (5-2) was among the fighters revealed earlier by Cage Warriors for their Irish return at the 3Arena on March 4th.
Speaking directly with Costigan she disclosed that her opponent will be English prospect Wendy McKenna (1-0) and shared her thoughts on what she expects.
"My opponent is a Wendy McKenna, a very dedicated fighter from the BKK crew. I know them well from other fighters as they are very respected in MMA circles. Her coach Jack Mason is a high level Cage Warriors fighter. He's coaching her to defeat me and take her to glory."
It has been a long road back to the cage for 'The Alpha Female' due to injury. Her last fight took place in September 2015, two months prior she made her US debut in Invicta and it was in preparation for this fight that she suffered a herniated disc. It was upon knowing this that you can appreciate Costigan's heart and perseverance over her past two fights.
"I herniated my disc in my lower back before the Invicta Fight but never knew until the MRI showed it up two weeks before last fight on BAMMA," said Costigan. "I couldn't go into both of those fights with the same confidence that I had done a great camp as usual. I should have pulled out but that's my mistake, I've learnt from that. This is why I took nearly 15 months to return. The Cage Warrior fans and Alpha Force deserves the best me and they are going to get in on March 4th."
As previously stated, Costigan fought for leading all-female promotion Invicta FC and reveals that she is still signed with them. However, she explained that they allowed her compete for Cage Warriors and explained the role the promotion has played on her career and how much she is looking to relaunching their atomweight division.
"I am still signed to Invicta FC but Shannon Knapp has kindly allowed me to do this, she always notices when other top promotions can help develop WMMA. Eventually that will lead to her door and a richer picking pot for Invicta FC," explained Costigan.
"Cage Warriors made my pro career and I'm honored to relaunch the atomweight division with them. It is fantastic that this will be on UFC Fight pass, now no one can miss out on my return. Being in the 3Arena, well it's always an honor walking out to Irish cheers I'm expecting my 'Alpha Force' to come out in droves.
"As Dominic Cruz said - 'it's our privilege to be fighters'".
Cage Warriors 81 takes place from the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland on March 4th.
