Northern Ireland's female trailblazer Leah McCourt continues to earn titles, accolades and awards, deservedly so.
2016 was a breakout year for the Fight Academy Ireland fighter. She traveled to Las Vegas during the summer and was crowned world champion in her division after winning three fights (all first round stoppages) over the course of just a few days.
This win saw her get mainstream media coverage in Northern Ireland with TV appearances and articles in national newspapers and the BBC.
These awards are nominated by a number of WMMA's most informed and educated journalists.
However, McCourt (6-1) faces stiff competition. 31 fighters from all over the planet have also been nominated for this award, including the following standouts for 2016:
- Cornelia Holm (8-3; 7-0 in 2016; IMMAF World & European Champion)
- Gabriella Ringblom (8-3; 5-1 in 2016; IMMAF World & African champion)
- Aleksandra Toncheva (8-0; 5-0 in 2016; IMMAF World & European Champion)
- Andrea Amaro (5-0 in 2016)
