Jay Ar Campos (6-6) takes to the Clan Wars cage once again this Saturday night as he faces Chris Gaile in a welterweight contest.
The 22-year-old is one of Irish MMA's most exciting amateur fighters to watch and people are already anticipating his pro run.
We sat down with the Kokoro fighter to talk about a number of topics including his fight this weekend.
Combat Gear: How did you get into the sport and how long have you been training?
Jay Ar Campos: Well I started training around 2012-13. One of my friends brought me to an MMA gym to train and after a while he convinced me to fight, I gave it a try and it all started from then. I fell in love with the sport.
What are things like training at Kokoro?
This is the gym that I would put all my hard work into and hopefully one day it will be one of the most known martial arts gym in Dublin. I couldn't ask for much more from my training partners. We all train hard, beat the shit out of each other and mostly learning the sport and also learning new things from coach Daragh Kennedy.
What is a typical week like for you in terms of training?
I train 5 days a week and I try to train twice a day if I can. If I am not home then I am in the gym training.
How would you describe your fighting style?
I would describe it as fast, aggressive, and creative.
Who are your inspiration(s) in martial arts?
It has to be Dominick Cruz, one of the only fighters that really inspires me in the sport.
You seem to be a Clan Wars regular at this point. What is it about this show that you like?
Clan wars is one of the best shows that I have competed on. It is not about the shows I like, I would compete on different shows but I mostly get match for Clan Wars.
You're fighting Chris Gaile this Saturday. What are your thoughts on him?
My thoughts on him is that he is an aggressive fighter that will look for a takedown because he doesn't like to get hit in the face.
Have you a prediction for the fight?
No prediction just looking for the finish and on to the next one.
As an amateur fighter, what do you think of the new scans and safety measures being implemented in Irish MMA.
Well in my opinion it is a bit b.s because some of us can't afford to get them done and this new rule with rashgaurds and shin pads, I think it is pointless. It is good for other fighters that are new to the sport but for the other fighters who want to turn pro it is just a step back for them but I can't do nothing about it, it is what they want.
