John Michael Sheil (8-1), or JMS, will make his long awaited return to MMA tomorrow at Hard Knocks 54 in Canada.
He was originally slated to face off against Bellator and M-1 veteran Jason Norwood (16-4) but will now face the undefeated Menad Abella (4-0). The Canadian made his pro debut less than 18 months ago and has wracked up four straight TKO/KO wins on the local scene in Canada.
JMS was once one of Irish MMA's top fighters. One considered most likely to help break down the barriers to the UFC for Irish fighters and now he returns just over four years since he last competed.
The Wicklow man began his pro career in 2007 and amassed an 8-0 record over the following five years. His popular fights with John Redmond, Henry Fadipe, Conor Cooke and Ross Pointon helped build the pre-UFC foundations for Irish MMA when the sport was just starting to boom in the country.
He also found success for himself in Cage Warriors where he went 2-0, and beat a very tough an established fighter in Victor Cheng, before, in his last contest at Cage Warrior 49, he was on the wrong end of a split decision loss to Faycal Hucin.
JMS made his pro debut in Canada, so it seems fitting that he restarts his career in Canada on St. Patrick's Day.
